No-code EA builders for MT4 and MT5, compared
How the main ways to build MetaTrader Expert Advisors without code differ: visual block builders, rule builders and strategy generators. What each is good at, and where QuantForge fits.
Updated 5 November 2026
There are three broad ways to build a MetaTrader Expert Advisor without writing MQL:
- Visual block builders: you draw the logic as connected blocks (QuantForge, fxDreema).
- Rule builders: you fill in conditions and actions in forms (EA Builder).
- Strategy generators: the software combines indicators and rules at random, keeps what tested well, and exports it (Expert Advisor Studio, StrategyQuant X).
This page compares how they work, not their prices, which change often: check each vendor’s site for current plans. Facts are as of November 2026; if something here is out of date, tell us and we’ll fix it.

QuantForge Studio
A visual builder with its own backtester. You build the rules from 160+ blocks, test them on M1 history exported from your own broker, watch the trades replay on the chart while the blocks light up, and export MQL4 or MQL5 that compiles with 0 errors, or the compiled file. It also converts existing EAs between MQL4 and MQL5, includes templates tested on two years of EURUSD data, and on Studio adds optimisation with a forward test, Monte Carlo analysis and an AI assistant.
Choose it if you have rules in mind and want to build, see and test them in one place before they reach MetaTrader.
Look elsewhere if you want software to search for strategies automatically: QuantForge builds what you design rather than mining for patterns.
fxDreema
One of the longest-running visual EA builders, with a large community and many examples on forums. You connect blocks in the browser and export MQL4 or MQL5. Testing happens in MetaTrader’s Strategy Tester.
Choose it if you want a mature block builder with years of community examples and you’re comfortable doing all testing in MetaTrader.
EA Builder
A web-based builder where you define entry and exit conditions in forms. Besides MetaTrader EAs, it builds indicators and alerts and supports TradeStation. Testing happens on the trading platform.
Choose it if you also trade on TradeStation or mainly need custom indicators and alerts.
Expert Advisor Studio
A browser-based strategy generator: it creates strategies from combinations of indicators and rules on your data, keeps the ones that pass your criteria, and offers robustness tools such as out-of-sample tests, Monte Carlo and multi-market checks. Exports to MT4 and MT5.
Choose it if you want to generate many candidate strategies and filter them, and you’re prepared to guard carefully against over-fitting.
StrategyQuant X
A desktop strategy-generation platform built on genetic programming, with extensive robustness testing and exports to MetaTrader and several other platforms. It aims at professional and heavy users, with a matching price.
Choose it if you research strategies at scale, across platforms and markets, and want the deepest set of robustness tools.
Whatever you choose
- A strategy found by search will always look good on the data it was found on. Keep a forward period aside and read how to avoid over-fitting.
- Test on your broker’s data with realistic costs (guide).
- Run the EA on a demo account before trading real money.

Frequently asked questions
Which EA builder is best?
It depends on how you work. If you have rules in mind and want to build and check them yourself, a visual builder suits you. If you want software to search thousands of random strategies for you, a strategy generator does that, with a higher risk of over-fitting that you must manage.
Can I move a strategy from another builder to QuantForge?
There is no import from other builders. If you have the exported .mq4 or .mq5, you can convert it between MT4 and MT5 with QuantForge's converter, or rebuild its rules from blocks (the AI assistant on Studio can draft them from a description).
